Centennial Discovery : Add new MAC addresses to the list of supported addresses in Discovery

When looking at the general tab of a machine with a MAC address beginning with 0017, 0018, 0019, 0021, 001A, 001B, 001C, 001D, 001E, 001F, 0021, 0022, 0023, or 0204 the MAC address and IP address are not displayed.

Centennial Discovery filters MAC addresses to ensure only valid hardware-based mac addresses are recorded in the Discovery database. As new MAC address ranges are released they will not be recognised as valid by Discovery as a result the data is discarded as invalid.

RESOLUTION

Newer versions of Discovery support more MAC addresses so it is always a good idea to consider upgrading to the latest release of Discovery.

Discovery 2006 Feature Pack 1 added a new feature on the server that makes it possible to add new MAC addresses using a SQL script provided by Centennial. The current release of this script adds support for 0017, 0018, 0019, 0021, 001A, 001B, 001C, 001D, 001E, 001F, 0021, 0022, 0023, and 0204 to the control centre. The script is attached to this document.

To update the server save the attached script to the C:\Program Files\Centennial\Discovery\Scripts folder on the server. In the control centre select Tools, Execute Scripts, select 'SCCD 6.1-7.1 New Macs R5.SQL' and click Execute.

The client agent also filters MAC addresses. The list of supported MAC addresses on the client can be updated in the CLIENT.XML. Making this change requires modifying an XML document. If you are uncomfortable making such changes please contact technical support for assistance.

1) Backup C:\Program Files\Centennial\Discovery\ClientFiles\CLIENT.XML
2) Open C:\Program Files\Centennial\Discovery\ClientFiles\CLIENT.XML in a text or XML editor.

The default file looks like this:

Add the following lines:

The resulting file should look like this:

3) Save the changes.
4) Deploy a test client to a machine with a previously unsupported MAC address and validate the fix has worked.
5) Update all of your clients using Tools, Update All Secure Clients.
